Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon Roll Dough Ingredients:

1 cup milk
1/3 cup butter melted
2 eggs *room temperature*
4 1/2 cup bread flour
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 tsp yeast
1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup butter melted
2/3 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp cinnamon

1 apple diced
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp lemon juice *optional*

(requires bread machine)
  1. melt together milk and butter in the microwave until warm but not necessarily completely melted
    • You don't want the milk/butter to be too hot or it will kill the yeast. You want it to be just about lukewarm so it can activate the yeast. I melted mine in the microwave for about 60 seconds
  2. Add milk and butter to the bread machine basket, then add in the room temperature eggs
    • It's important the eggs aren't cold so they match the temperature of the butter. If the eggs are cold they will cause the warmed butter to solidify and cool down
  3. Add in the bread flour on top of the wet ingredients
    • Bread flour makes for the best light and fluffy results. I've made this before with all purpose flour and it works, but it comes out a bit denser and definitely not as fluffy
  4. Add in the salt, yeast, and sugar (separated from each other)
    • it's most important to make sure the yeast and salt don't touch before mixing or the salt will kill the yeast before it can do its work
  5. Place the bread basket into the bread machine and select the dough option
  6. Once the machine is done mixing and proofing the dough, turn it out onto your counter and knead it a bit to knock out the air
  7. Then shape the dough it to a ball and place is in a lightly sealed container to rest for 15 minutes
  8. Meanwhile, melt the 1/4 cup butter and set aside then mix together the 2/3 cup brown sugar and 2 tbsp cinnamon
  9. Place the diced apple in a bowl with 1tsp cinnamon and some lemon juice and mix together to combine
    • lemon juice isn't necessary but it helps bring out the apple flavor. I usually don't have lemons on hand so if I don't have any I just skip it
  10. Once 15 minutes has passed, roll the dough out into a long rectangle
  11. Spread the melted 1/4 cup butter over the dough and sprinkle the cinnamon & sugar mixture on top then add the apples
  12. Roll the dough into a long roll length wise and cut into 12 cinnamon rolls
    • I find that cutting using dental floss is very simple and handy (see video for reference)
  13. Place the cinnamon rolls in a pan and let it proof in a warm place
  14. Heat the oven to 400f
  15. When the oven is ready and the cinnamon rolls have about doubled in size, bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes
